Info / Description:
The widest M42 lens known to exist and only a very limited quantity was manufactured before Pentax switch to the K mount version. It is known that the very early example (about 500 of them) use hand grounded Aspherical elements while the engineer perfecting the optical design.

Uses built-in filters like 17mm Asahi Fisheyes .

Regarded Pentax authority Dario Bonazza claims that only about 900 specimens of the SMC Takumar 1:3.5/15 were ever produced, of which ca. 400 had one aspherical lens element as a central part of the design.
According to Bojidar Dimitrov’s and Hidenori Nohara’s findings, the ca. 400 lenses with the aspherical lens design can be discerned by looking at the focusing distance feet scale “7-4-2-1.5…”, which differs from the “7-3-2-1.5…” feet scale of the non-aspherical version.

There were two optical versions of this lens in both the M42 and K mount. The early version has the Aspherical element and the later did not. In removing the Aspherical element, other lens elements changed and can be determined by the front element retaing ring.
Also, this lens was designed in partnership with Zeiss and they had a similar lens in the Contax mount. Primary difference was they used a floating element rather than Aspherics.
